10 adventure spots in the Western Cape

From waterfall hikes to cliff jumping - active day trips for when you need to move, not just sit.

Sometimes you don't want a wine tasting. You want to sweat, jump off something, or hike until your legs burn. The Western Cape has you covered.

1. Suicide Gorge - Hottentots Holland

The classic Cape adventure hike. A full-day canyoneering route with cliff jumps, river crossings, and a 15-metre waterfall jump (optional, but you'll want to). Permit required - book through CapeNature.

2. Paragliding from Lion's Head

Tandem flights launch from Signal Hill and soar over Camps Bay. No experience needed. The flight lasts 15-20 minutes and the views are unreal.

3. Shark cage diving - Gansbaai

About two hours from Cape Town, Gansbaai is the shark capital of South Africa. Multiple operators run morning trips. You'll be back in the city by mid-afternoon.

4. Crystal Pools - Steenbras

A moderate hike near Gordon's Bay that ends at a series of natural rock pools. The water is fresh and cold. Bring snacks and spend a few hours swimming between the pools.

5. Zip-lining at Cape Canopy Tour

In the Hottentots Holland mountains near Elgin, this canopy tour has 11 slides through indigenous forest. It's thrilling but safe, and the scenery is spectacular.

6. Surfing at Muizenberg

The gentle waves at Muizenberg are perfect for beginners. Rent a board and wetsuit from one of the shops on the beachfront. Lessons available if you've never surfed before.

7. Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge

The most direct route up Table Mountain. It's steep and relentless, but you'll be at the top in about 2 hours. Take the cable car down and reward yourself with a cold drink at the bottom.

8. Coasteering at Kalk Bay

Cliff jumping, swimming through sea caves, and scrambling along the rocky coastline. Guided tours run year-round and cater to all fitness levels.

9. Mountain biking at Tokai Forest

Single-track trails through pine forest on the slopes of Constantiaberg. Routes range from easy to technical. Bike hire available at the entrance.

10. Sandboarding at Atlantis Dunes

30 minutes from the city centre, these massive sand dunes are perfect for sandboarding. Operators provide boards and transport up the dunes. Great for groups.
