Eat your way through a day trip

Farm-to-table lunches, roadside stalls, and sunset dinners - curated food-first itineraries.

Some of the best day trips aren't about what you see - they're about what you eat. The Western Cape is a food lover's paradise, and these itineraries put your stomach first.

Route 1: The Overberg food trail

Start with coffee and fresh pastries at Peregrine Farm Stall near Grabouw. Drive through to Botrivier for a wine tasting at Beaumont, then lunch at the legendary Houw Hoek Farm Stall. End the day with craft beer at Birkenhead Brewery in Stanford.

Route 2: Franschhoek - the food capital

Morning croissants at Bread & Wine (Moreson estate). Mid-morning olive oil tasting at La Motte. Long lunch at Maison (their tasting menu is worth every rand). Afternoon cheese at Dalewood Fromage. You won't need dinner.

Route 3: West Coast seafood run

Drive up the R27 to Langebaan. Start with oysters at Die Strandloper (book ahead - it's a legendary open-air seafood feast on the beach). If Strandloper is full, Boesmanland Plaaskombuis in Langebaan does incredible potjiekos and braai. Stop at Darling for craft beer on the way home.

Route 4: The Constantia crawl

You don't even need to leave the southern suburbs. Start at the Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock (Saturdays), then drive to Constantia for wine and lunch at La Colombe or The Foodbarn. End with gelato at Massimo's in Hout Bay.

Pro tips

Book lunch spots in advance, especially on weekends. Bring a cooler bag for farm stall purchases. And pace yourself - the goal is to enjoy every bite, not rush through.
