Weekend escapes under R500 per person

Great getaways don't have to break the bank. These budget-friendly options prove it.

You don't need a big budget to have a great day out. Some of the best experiences in the Western Cape cost next to nothing - you just need to know where to look.

West Coast National Park (under R100)

Entry is around R80 per person. Pack a picnic, drive to Postberg (open in flower season) or Kraalbaai lagoon, and spend the day swimming in turquoise water. Bring your own food and drinks - total cost per person: under R150.

Kirstenbosch + Constantia wine route (R200-R350)

Entry to Kirstenbosch is R80. Walk the Boomslang canopy walkway, explore the gardens, then drive five minutes to Constantia for a tasting at Beau Constantia or Eagles' Nest. A tasting runs R80-R150. Add a shared cheese platter and you're still under R350.

Hermanus whale watching (free - R200)

Between June and November, you can watch southern right whales from the cliffs for free. Drive out, grab fish and chips at the harbour, and walk the cliff path. If you want to get closer, boat trips start around R200 per person.

Franschhoek on foot (R250-R400)

Skip the wine tram (it's pricey). Instead, park in town and walk to the estates closest to the main road - Grande Provence, La Motte, and Leopard's Leap are all walkable. Tastings average R80. Grab lunch at one of the more casual spots and you're well under R500.

Cape Point + Fish Hoek beach day (R200-R400)

Cape Point entry is around R80 (SA residents). Hike to the old lighthouse, then drive back via Simon's Town and stop at Fish Hoek beach for a swim. Grab takeaway from Salty Sea Dog. Budget-friendly and beautiful.
