Winelands without the crowds

Skip the tourist trail. These hidden estates and farm stalls offer the real Winelands experience.

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek are beautiful - but on a Saturday in peak season, they can feel more like a theme park than a wine region. The good news: some of the best wine experiences in the Cape are tucked away on quieter roads, with no queues and no booking fees.

Go east: the Bottelary Hills

Just 20 minutes from Stellenbosch, the Bottelary Hills are home to small, family-run estates producing some of the region's best red blends. The views over Table Bay are a bonus. Try Kaapzicht or Hartenberg for a relaxed, no-fuss tasting.

The Slent Road loop

Between Stellenbosch and the Helderberg, this quiet back road connects a handful of boutique farms. Stop at Haskell for serious wines, then Longridge for lunch with a view. You'll barely see another tourist.

Tulbagh - the forgotten valley

An hour from Cape Town, Tulbagh has Cape Dutch architecture, excellent olive oil, and a growing number of small wineries. Saronsberg and Rijk's are standouts. The pace here is genuinely slow - exactly what a day trip should feel like.

Farm stalls worth the detour

Skip the overpriced deli counters in town. Instead, hit up the farm stalls on the R44 and R45: fresh bread, local cheese, seasonal fruit, and homemade preserves. Our favourites include the Stellenbosch Farm Stall and the Pniel Road vendors.

Timing matters

Visit midweek if you can. But even on weekends, these spots stay quiet because they're not on the standard tour bus route. That's the whole point.
